Election Question: Voters Will Choose to Extend Property Tax Relief for Veterans

Posted on October 8, 2020 at 9:37 AM by Legislative Staff

This election, voters will have the chance to decide whether New Jersey military veterans will receive property-tax relief via one of this year’s public questions. State Public Question #2 seeks to amend New Jersey’s Constitution to provide property tax breaks to military veterans and their spouses. Currently, the deduction and exemption are only given to veterans who served during the time of war.

The question asks:

“Do you approve amending the Constitution to give a $250 property tax deduction to veterans who did not serve in time of war? Do you also approve amending the Constitution to give a 100 percent property tax exemption to certain totally disabled veterans who did not serve in time of war?”

‘The widow or widower of these veterans also would receive this $250 deduction or 100 percent exemption after the veteran’s death.”

The expansion of the proposed tax breaks would cost an annual $13.6 million, according to the fiscal estimate.  The state would be required to provide an administrative reimbursement to the municipality for each qualified veteran.
