The Electric School Bus Grant Program offered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) is a $15 million annual over three years grant to assist school districts and contractors purchase electric buses and charging infrastructure. Grants range from $300,000 to $350,000 per bus. The program also supports innovative Eco-hub pilot projects that integrate vehicle-to-building technology. Eligible applicants include school districts that own their buses and contractors applying in partnership with schools.
Municipalities may collaborate with school districts and bus contractors to facilitate partnerships, assist with permitting and zoning for charging infrastructure, and help coordinate with utility providers to ensure grid readiness. Municipal case studies from last year's first round of funding are available for reference
Interested applicants can find full details and access the application on the NJDEP Electric School Bus Grant Program page. The deadline to apply for Round 2 funding is September 26, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.
