On Monday, April 22, Department of Labor (DOL) Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo testified before the Assembly Budget Committee regarding the DOL's proposed SFY 2025 budget allocation of $207.1 million.
The Commissioner began by outlining the DOL's commitment to modernizing existing programs, implementing new initiatives, and preparing for future challenges. He touted the success of the DOL's apprenticeship programs, which have been supported by $60 million in DOL grants, highlighting the significant benefits to women, veterans, and minority-owned businesses.
The Commissioner also highlighted various accomplishments by the DOL since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic that have benefited private sector employees. Among these initiatives is SkillUpNJ which offers courses and online training for job seekers.
The Commissioner also addressed the labor shortage, specifically pointing to New Jersey’s residency requirement for government employees as a significant barrier to employment. He emphasized the need for systemic changes to effectively fill these roles. Highlighting the successful adoption of the state hybrid work policy, he praised the remote work program that allows state employees to work from home, which has greatly benefited the DOL workforce. He cautioned that without such flexibility, the department would face a dramatic decrease in its current number of employees.
