[ARCHIVED] Senate to Consider Bill Extending Useful Life of Fire Trucks

S-3807/A-5567 Expands the useful period of fire trucks under the Local Bond Law, as follows:

  • All fire engines, apparatus, and equipment when purchased new from 10 years to 20 years.

  • Vehicles based on gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) with:

  • GVWR below 15,000 pounds to 5 years.

  • GVWR in excess of 15,000 pounds to 10 years

The bill also expands the ability to bond for major repairs, reconditioning, or overhaul of certain vehicles to include public works vehicles with a GVWR in excess of 15,000 pounds and heavy equipment with a weight in excess of 10,000 pounds.

The bill defines GVWR as the “value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single or combination (articulated) vehicle. The GVWR of a combination (articulated) vehicle, commonly referred to as the gross combination weight rating or GCWR, is the GVWR of the power unit plus the GVWR of the towed unit or units.

The bill, which would take effect immediatelyunanimously passed the Assembly in December. If passed by the Senate on January 8, the bill would head to Governor Murphy’s desk.
