Newly Elected Officials Seminars Encourage Education and Networking

Newly elected officials attended programs held by the New Jersey State League of Municipalities (NJLM) on January 10, 2015 at the Sheraton Hotel in Eatontown and February 7, 2015 at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel in Rutherford on the topic of “Orientation for Newly Elected, Re-Elected, and Experienced officials.” These programs, attended by over 200 Municipal Officials, were moderated by Mayor Thomas Kelaher; Toms River Township, and Mayor James Cassella; East Rutherford Borough; NJLM Third Vice President. Featured speakers included the NJLM and various State and Local Officials.

Attendees learned about NJLM services available to local government officials; details on the municipal budget process and best practices; the local government purchasing procedures; the importance of leadership and working with professional staff; obligations under the Open Public Records Act and Open Public Meetings Act; government ethics; and labor contracts. Attendees also had several opportunities throughout the day network with each other.
