Governor Murphy Names Secretary of State Way as Lt. Governor

Earlier today, Governor Murphy announced Secretary of State Tahesha L. Way is the next Lt. Governor of New Jersey.

Lt. Governor Way was sworn in as Secretary of State on February 26, 2018. As Secretary of State, Lt. Governor Way serves as the State’s top election official, chaired New Jersey’s Complete Count Commission, and oversees the state government offices supporting the State’s arts, culture, history, and business communities. Lt. Governor Way served as the President of the National Association of Secretaries of State and represented fellow Secretaries of State on the Council of State Governments and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission Board of Advisors.

Prior to becoming Secretary of State, Lt. Governor Way was an Administrative Law Judge. In 2006, she was elected to the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders and served as the Freeholder Director in 2009. She also served as special counsel for the Passaic County Board of Social Services; council member for the New Jersey Highlands Water Protection and Planning Council; former president of the Women Empowered Democratic Organization of Passaic County; and member on the Board of Directors for the Institute for Women’s Policy Research.

In her acceptance remarks, Lt. Governor Way stated, “so, here is my promise to the people of New Jersey: Like Sheila, I will dedicate every day of my life to fighting for the forgotten families of our state. I will do everything in my power to bring [sic] down the cost of living, so no parent will have to suffer the indignity of choosing between putting food on the table or keeping a roof over their child's head. I will protect our fundamental freedoms—so every resident of our state can make their own health care decisions, or access affordable higher education, or simply, marry who they love and live as who they are in their hearts. And, of course, I will work to ensure that New Jersey remains the best—and safest—state to raise a family.”
