In February, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) announced it would be making available of $19 million in grants to help municipalities with the transition to new municipal stormwater permitting requirements. Additional details on the grant program have now been released and are available on the NJDEP website.
The grant program offers $75,000 to each of the 101 former Tier B municipalities that were notified of reassigned to Tier A as of July 01, 2022. In addition, all 456 Tier A municipalities that were assigned to Tier A prior to July 1, 2022, are eligible for $25,000 in funding.
The initial grant of $19 million is welcomed, but it is unlikely to be enough to cover the initial cost of compliance, not to mention any continued costs municipalities will incur to maintain compliance. The League is continuing our efforts to review strategies to provide relief from the NJDEP’s mandates.
Deadline for grant applications is December 31. Eligible Municipalities will be notified of the award on a rolling basis. Questions on the grant program should be directed to the NJDEP at stormwatergrantsinfo@dep.nj.gov.
