NJBPU Seeking Input on LED Streetlight Program

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) has issued a Request for Comments, seeking input from interested parties regarding the conversion of existing streetlights to LED streetlights. Specifically, seeking information related to streetlight and pole inventory and ownership, and the current utility tariff.

LED streetlights use considerably less energy than older streetlights and conversion could have considerable long-term costs savings that should be accounted for in the utility tariff. The League has long advocated for LED streetlight conversion, when appropriate, and for these cost savings to be reflected in an updated utility tariff and passed through to the municipality.

We will be monitoring this issue closely and encourage our members to submit individual comments. The deadline for comments on this matter is 5 p.m. on March 15. If you do submit comments, please forward a copy to the League as well.
