LEAGUE FORMS TASK FORCE TO STUDY
IMMIGRATION ISSUES AFFECTING MUNICIPALITIES

January 29, 2007

The New Jersey League of Municipalities has formed a Task Force to study the effect of illegal immigration on municipalities.  The first meeting of this group took place on January 26, 2007.  The issues discussed included overcrowding and the health and safety dangers involved in this practice as well as the cost to municipalities of providing education, law enforcement, and other services to substantial numbers of individuals who do not pay taxes.  The Task Force will seek solutions to these problems in future meetings. The group will also meet with New Jersey Public Advocate Ronald Chen to discuss municipal concerns on this subject and what municipalities can and cannot do to deal constructively with these concerns.

The League Task Force is chaired by Michael Wildes, Mayor of Englewood.  Other members include Joe Bellina, Administrator of Freehold Borough, Kerry Higgins, Attorney, Freehold Borough, and Christopher Vaz, League Associate Counsel.
