WHAT: Sustainable Jersey is hosting a press event to announce the 14 New Jersey municipalities that have won grants for sustainable projects. Ten (10) $10,000 grants and four (4) $25,000 grants will be distributed. Winning municipalities come from ten counties: Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Essex, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris and Warren. Over 100 municipalities submitted proposals that were judged by an independent Blue Ribbon Selection Committee. Projects awarded address a broad range of sustainability issues such as energy, water resources and community food production. Many include community outreach components and several involve youth activities.
WHO: Sustainable Jersey representatives will provide an overview of the grants and representatives of the New Jersey League of Municipalities Education Foundation and Wal-Mart will introduce the 14 winning municipalities. Mayors from the winning towns will be on hand to accept the awards.

WHY: To promote sustainability and public/private partnerships, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the New Jersey League of Municipalities Education Foundation, and the NJLM Mayors Committee for a Green Future (MCGF) established the Sustainable Jersey Small Grants Program. Sustainable Jersey is a certification program for municipalities in New Jersey that want to go green, control costs and save money, and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term. The innovative program is an initiative of the MCGF, the Municipal Land Use Center at the College of New Jersey and the New Jersey Sustainable State Institute at Rutgers University.
