League of Municipalities’ Executive Director Bill Dressel today commends Senate President Steve Sweeney’s for his leadership in advancing a shared services component to the municipal management reform and mandates relief package making its way through the Legislature.

“Senator Sweeney, like the League of Municipalities, has long been a proponent of shared services,” said Dressel. “Both as a State Senator and as a Freeholder, he has worked with Mayors in his county and throughout the State to support property tax relief initiatives like shared services.

“In this, as in other areas, he has carefully built a consensus for reform by quantifying the costs and the benefits of different service-delivery models. And, where service-sharings have been shown to produce real value for our taxpayers, he has led the way.

“We have always supported the work of the Local Unit Alignment, Reorganization and Consolidation Commission (LUARCC) and any specific shared services initiatives that respect the rights of our citizens to determine the destiny of their municipalities and the rights of local elected officials to protect their citizens’ interests.

“We look forward to working with Senate President Sweeney and with all interested parties on this matter, and other management reform and mandates relief initiatives. And, again, our thanks to all municipal officials, who have contacted their representatives in Trenton on these crucial property tax relief matters.”
