Community Leaders Review Lessons at 

“Emergency Management:  Utilities and Weather Emergencies”

TRENTON, NJ (September 29, 2011) The NJLM Educational Foundation hosted a special educational event on emergency management and utilities September 28, 2011, at the Scullville Fire Company in Egg Harbor Twp., NJ. 

 This event educated New Jersey communities most affected by weather emergencies on the resources available to them from the utilities that service them including electric, phone, gas, cable, and water.  The utilities shared their emergency planning, communication procedures, and provide contact information for cohesive coordination during weather emergencies.  The Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management reviewed lessons learned from recent storm events and plans for new developing new procedures.  Among the lessons learned were the effectiveness of mandatory evacuations, development of partnerships with other agencies, and the importance of pre-planning resource suppliers from outside affected areas.

 During the afternoon attendees learned nuclear utility planning and preparations and related community coordination.  In addition, attendees were given a detailed explanation of the Japan earthquake and tsunami and how New Jersey nuclear power is protected from similar circumstances.
