Newly Elected Officials Seminars Encourage Education and Networking

On January 10, 2015 at the Sheraton Hotel in Eatontown and February 7, 2015 at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel in Rutherford, the NJLM held its Annual Orientations for Newly Elected, Re-Elected, and Experienced officials. These programs, attended by over 200 municipal officials, were moderated by Mayor Thomas Kelaher; Toms River Township, and Mayor James Cassella; East Rutherford Borough; NJLM Third Vice President. Featured speakers included the NJLM, Division of Local Government Services, the New Jersey Municipal Management Association, Municipal Clerks Association of New Jersey, the League’s General Counsel William Kearns, Esq, and the law firm of Genova Burns, LLC.

Attendees were given an overview of League Services, a look at the budgeting process and best practices, local public contracts law, the importance of their leadership role and how to work with their municipal staff. Attendees were also educated on the Open Public Records Act, the Open Public Meetings Act, ethical conduct and how it relates to their role as a municipal official as well as a labor relations overview.

If you were unable to attend these events, several of the presentations are posted online via our Presentations and Handouts page. There is also a Newly-Elected Handbook available for purchase via our Publications Page and a shortened Newly Elected session at our Annual Conference in November.
