League of Municipalities President Issues Statement on Hurricane Irene Cleanup
The New Jersey State League of Municipalities President, Mayor Chuck Chiarello of Buena Vista, issued a statement today praising the response to hurricane Irene and detailing what still needs to be done.
President Chiarello praised the work of his fellow local elected officials, as well as the Christie Administration, in making efforts to limit damage and keep the public safe during the recent hurricane.
Also singled out for praise was the decision by President Barack Obama to issue a Presidential Disaster Declaration for certain counties in New Jersey. However, it is clear that more will be added.
“While the initial Declaration only includes five counties, we learned that the Office of Emergency Management used the five counties listed to meet the threshold for a major disaster declaration. Now that the President declared those five counties to be disaster areas, additional counties can be added without having to go to the President. OEM and FEMA are doing Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDA's) and counties will be added if they meet the damage thresholds for inclusion into the declaration,” said President Chiarello.
President Chiarello also called out several utilities based on complaints from fellow mayors of an inadequate response during and after the storm. “We have called upon the Board of Public Utilities to conduct a thorough review of the numerous concerns expressed by Mayors and to hold public hearings to develop a viable response plan for future emergencies.”
