FROM THE PRESIDENT
By Robert L. Bowser, Mayor, East Orange City

November 18-21 Municipal officials from across the State of New Jersey will gather in Atlantic City at one of the most critical financial times since the Depression.  This 93rd Annual Conference will help you address many of the pressing issues in our country, our state and our communities.  You are not in this alone; we all share common problems and collectively we can change things for better.

Note and review the special schedule and event notices in this Newsline so you are aware of some important changes in the conference format.  I especially want you to attend the League’s Business Meeting on Friday, November 21, at 9:00 a.m. at the Sheraton Hotel.  Only the Mayor or their official designee can vote, but we welcome all municipal officials into the discussion of League business.

Let me on a personal note thank Bill Dressel, Jr. and the entire League staff for their professional approach, research and expertise during this challenging year.  We have been guided through a maze of issues such as:  School Funding Formula; Municipal Aid Cuts; New Housing Legislation; Governors Ethics Reform; 3rd Round of COHA; O.P.R.A. Challenge; Toll Road Increases; Rural State Police Mandate; Stormwater Mandates; Subprime Mortgage and Foreclosure Crises; “ Green Community Initiatives (Wal-Mart Grant)”; Public Safety Initiatives (Gangs, Guns Drugs and Violence); etc.

I want to thank all the Committee Chairs, Co-Chairs and Committee members who gave of their time and knowledge to prepare our positions on all of these issues.  We, as a League presented what was the right position for our rural boroughs and villages, as well as our suburban, urban and city communities.  We never lost our perspective that property tax relief and tax reform was our major concern.

From the President (cont)

It was always my hope we could talk to this Administration and Legislatures to express our well-founded views on all issues before new laws, program and regulations were put into place.  The last thing I wanted was the League to be viewed as always taking a negative position on most issues.  Hopefully, with change in the air we can improve on early discussions and not be placed in a defensive position.  We all have common objectives to serve the people of this state as best we can with useful information.

As I have all year, I urge you to stay vigilant in your efforts to better your community.  Thank you for your dedication to public service.
