On November 15, the Legislature’s special session committees on the property tax crises will make recommendations for reform.  League legislative staff has closely monitored the committee meetings on our behalf.

Four special legislative committees as part of a special session on property taxes have been meeting since August. The committees include: Joint Legislative Committee on Constitutional Reform and Citizens Property Tax Constitutional Convention; Joint Legislative Committee on Public School Funding Reform; Joint Legislative Committee on Public Employee Benefits Reform; and Joint Legislative Committee on Government Consolidation and Shared Services.

 Coincidentally, the League will hold a major education session titled “The Property Tax Crisis” on Wednesday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m. in room 201/202 of the Atlantic City Convention Center. The program will feature key Senate and Assembly leaders and will hopefully shed some light and promise for real reform on behalf of our beleaguered property tax payers.

The Conference Resolutions Committee will consider resolutions from officials who are currently in municipal office. A summary of the proposed resolution should be sent to the League office by October 6, 2006. All resolutions must be general and relate to municipal government interests. The final version of the Resolution must be received in the League office by October 20, 2006. Contact the League for more information.

MAYORS INFORMATION CENTER

The Mayors Information Center continues to provide mayors a place to gather their thoughts, gain information and have a coffee break. Located across from the 2600 aisle in the exhibit hall, the Mayors Information Center can also serve as your office while in Atlantic City. Copy machines courtesy of Stewart Industries (booths 1700, 1702, and 1704), position statements, major daily newspapers and space for a small meeting will be available. Mayors may send/receive faxes at the registration area near entrance “C”. See League staff there for access to a fax. The League makes this special facility and services available because we understand the needs of New Jersey’s mayors.

The Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC), and co-hosts NJSLOM, NJ Future, and RPA, are pleased to present this workshop on the State Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) Act. Speakers will explain TDR, discuss how to plan for preservation and growth areas, and describe how to set up a TDR program

Mayors are encouraged to attend with a planning board member or environmental commissioner.  Learn how TDR can enable your community to plan for less consumptive land use, and better community design and smart growth. 

Workshop will be held on October 19, 2006, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Morris County Community Center in Morristown.  Contact ANJEC to register.

The International Council Of Shopping Centers in partnership with the International  Economic Development Council and many local, county and state agencies, including the League will hold a seminar on “Redevelopment: The New Unfunded Mandate.” The session will be held on Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at the Marriott Newark Airport Hotel. The panel will include Newark Mayor Cory Booker and will be moderated by Adam Zellner, Deputy Commissioner, NJ Department of Environmental Protection.
