RE: A-4247, Changes to Taxi License Laws
Yesterday in Trenton, the Assembly Transportation Committee released A-4247, which would permit municipalities to auction taxi licenses to the highest bidder and require cabs to post the taxi license number and the name of the licensing municipality on the exterior of the vehicle.
The process spelled out in this bill for the issuance of taxi licenses includes appropriate notice and publication requirements. It allows the municipality to establish qualifications, consistent with State laws and regulations, in order to ensure public safety and consumer protections. And, by allowing the auction of a license to the highest bidder, the bill permits the free market to determine the value of the concession. This, in turn, will provide some real relief to our property taxpayers.
County seats and other municipalities that host a high percentage of tax exempt properties also tend to generate a higher demand for taxi services. Those tax exempt properties increase the burden shouldered by residents and businesses. This bill will provide appreciated relief to those taxpayers. It will, in fact, benefit any municipality that licenses taxis.
Accordingly, we support A-4247, which is scheduled for Assembly consideration on Monday, December 7. We appreciate this reform, sponsored by Assemblyman John Wisniewski.
Please urge your Assembly representatives to support A-4247.
Very truly yours,
William G. Dressel, Jr.
