Important Conference Session Safe Streets and Neighborhoods

Dear Mayor:

Clinton Robinson, NBC-LEO Local Representative invites you to the League Joint Tandem Session on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 in Room 404 at the Atlantic City Convention Center.  This session, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., provides information on an alternative to address gang activity and violence in our communities.  Governor Corzine’s prevention component, A Strategy for Safe Streets and Neighborhoods, recognizes the Boys & Girls Clubs as a venue to provide the youth with a positive environment and activities that promote self-esteem, and a sense of belongingness.  An additional component to prevent juvenile delinquency is the Boys & Girls Clubs - GANG PREVENTION THROUGH TARGETED OUTREACH model.

ROBERT L. BOWSER, Mayor, East Orange; League President, will preside over Part I, and SHARON ROBINSON-BRIGGS, Mayor, Plainfield, will preside over Part II.  Three special guests will share their insight, CREIGHTON DRURY, Director of the New Jersey Crime Prevention Initiative, Office of the Attorney General¸ CRYSTAL MILLAN, Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year, and VAUGHN L. MCKOY, PSE&G Executive, and Beneficiary of Volunteer Mentor of the late Arthur M. Goldberg.  To understand fully the components of Governor Corzine’s vision, Boys & Girls Club of America key stakeholders will lend their expertise.  Moreover, you will hear from your colleagues CORY BOOKER (INVITED), Mayor, Newark City; Member, League Executive Board, WAYNE SMITH, Mayor, Irvington, KEVIN G. SANDERS, Mayor, Asbury Park,
ROBERT ROMANO, Mayor, Vineland, and JOSE “JOEY” TORRES, Mayor, Paterson, some of whom have a Boys & Girls Club in their community; others do not; while other municipalities share a Boys & Girls Club.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the NBC-LEO and the Boys & Girls of America session on Wednesday, November 19.  Working collaboratively, providing a positive alternative to prevent juvenile delinquency and gang involvement before it becomes a problem, will bring about change!
