Re: Governor’s Economic
Recovery Initiative
Dear Mayor:
Earlier today, Governor Corzine addressed a rare joint session of the Legislature to outline the major components of his economic recovery plan for the State. http://www.state.nj.us/governor/news/speeches/economic_plan.html

The Governor recognizes the limitations on what New Jersey and our member municipalities can do to address disruptions in global and national financial markets. But he also recognizes that there is much we can and should do for our fellow citizens, who could be the innocent victims of those disruptions. His plan focuses on emergency assistance for those victims in three crucial areas; namely energy, housing and nutrition. And the Main Street Assistance Program will begin to reassure New Jersey banks and businesses, so that they will maintain, and maybe even increases, current employment opportunities. Employment opportunities will also be enhanced by the Governor’s commitment to expedite State capital projects already approved.
We commend Governor Corzine for focusing his Administration and the Legislature on this issue. And we thank him for reaching out to the League and our member Mayors, and for asking us to share our ideas and our expertise in the ongoing development and evaluation of policy options. As the public officials closest to the people and their problems, we look forward to working with the Administration and the Legislature on refining and implementing a fast response to real people problems. And, again, we thank the Governor for assuring us a seat at the policy development table.
