Re: Federal Stimulus Funding U.S. Department of Justice Byrne Justice Assistance Grants
Thanks to NLC’s Mitch Herckis, we have just learned that the amount of Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne JAG) funding going to individual states and local governments has been released by the Department of Justice. The $2 billion in Byrne JAG funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act can be used for a wide range of crime prevention and law enforcement activities.
State and local allocations are available here: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/BJA/recoveryJAG/recoveryallocations.html
We are awaiting official guidance from the Department of Justice on how the funds can be accessed, but this will give you some insights in to the level of funding set aside for various communities in our state.
Under Byrne JAG, 40 percent of funding goes directly to local governments, and 60 percent goes to the state to distribute. States are required to pass a percentage of these funds through to localities. We will be receiving information on how much of those funds the state will be required to pass through very soon and will update you when we know. For more information on how the state intends to distribute formula grant funds, contact our state administrator:
