Re: 2010 Census Questionnaries
As we move closer to the distribution of the 2010 Census questionnaires, we want to let you know that New Jersey households will receive in advance a “Save the Date” notice. This postcard will inform residents that the census forms will be mailed to every home in the country on March 13, 2010. It is critical that residents fill out the form and mail it back right away. Millions of taxpayer dollars can be saved by increasing the mail response rate, reducing the number of census workers who must go door-to-door.
The following link will connect you to the final 2000 Census Mail Response for New Jersey counties and municipalities: http://www.census.gov/dmd/www/response/disp-fro.34.txt. With this information as the basis, the 2010 Census Municipal Awareness Committee has been working in cooperation with the New York Regional Census Center and other partners, to increase New Jersey’s mail response rate during the 2010 Census, especially in harder to count communities.
The best news of all is that the Census form is the shortest in history – just 10 questions that should take about 10 minutes to answer. Answers are kept confidential, and the Census Bureau is prohibited by law from sharing personal information with anyone including other government or law enforcement agencies. Census data are used to apportion congressional seats to states; to distribute more than $400 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year; and to make decisions about what community services to provide. The census is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to get an accurate count of citizens and non-citizens residing in New Jersey and throughout the U.S. Therefore, it is in every community’s best interest that all residents be counted.
Please note that Be Counted Sites will be established in municipalities to assist residents if missed by the Bureau’s mail campaign, with retrieving a 2010 Census form. Residents who need help completing the census form can also visit Questionnaire Assistance Centers to receive help. For more information, call 212-356-3100.
Thank you for being a valuable partner. Your support will make the 2010 Census the most complete and accurate count ever for New Jerseyans. The 2010 CENSUS: IT’S IN OUR HANDS.
