The League’s Educational Foundation hosted a seminar on “Social Media for Public Officials,” on March 30, 2010 at the Prudential Center in Newark.
Christopher Rosica, CEO Rosica Public Relations, addresses the finer points of using social media effectively.
The communications landscape has changed dramatically over the last few years, driven by new technologies, new media and precipitous losses in the newspaper industry. Many local officials and municipalities now maintain a presence on Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In, community websites and blogs to improve communication and reduce mailing costs. Many others see the sea-change happening and want to keep up, but have not.
While social media has created vast opportunities to enhance community outreach, it has also created pitfalls that public agencies must address. Participants learned how to become content producers, as well as consumers. Policy makers learned how to advocate on-line while protecting one’s on-line reputation.
The Educational Foundation’s Social Media panelists included:
Dennis Bone, President, Verizon New Jersey
Chairman, New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce
Cory A. Booker, Mayor, City of Newark
Christopher Rosica, CEO Rosica Public Relations
Desiree Peterkin-Bell, Communications Director
City of Newark
Robert Sommer, President Rock Entertainment
Michael Duhaime, Chief Strategist, Chris Christie for Governor & Managing Director, Mercury Public Affairs
Andrew Rasiej, Founder & Publisher, Personal Democracy Forum & Co-Founder
The League Education Foundation extends its thanks to Cory Booker and his team in Newark, Verizon New Jersey and our other sponsors, and the trustees and staff of the Educational Foundation for organizing this conference.
