Re:  News for 95th Annual Conference from the Mayors Wellness Committee

Dear Mayor,

With summer over and fall on the way, thoughts are turning to cooler weather.  Parents and their children are back at school. Summer vacations are over, but this is a perfect time of year to start thinking about wellness in your community.  This is the perfect time for you to join our Campaign!

The Mayors Wellness Campaign (MWC) is an initiative of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute in partnership with the New Jersey State League of Municipalities.  MWC provides structure and resources for healthy community initiatives, with a long-term goal of reducing health care and other costs secondary to obesity and inactivity.  MWC supports mayors as champions of community health.  By encouraging mayors to play a leadership role in supporting local opportunities for active, healthy lifestyles, the intent of MWC is to improve health and make New Jersey a national leader in community-based health interventions.

Fall is a great time of year to start wellness activities in your municipality. In fact, you may already be doing events and activities in your community that would fit in with the goals of MWC.  It’s wonderful to get outside to enjoy the cooler weather and watch the leaves change.  Some ideas for fall wellness events in your community are: visiting local farmers market; going apple picking; taking a nature walk to look at fall foliage; organizing a bike ride or hike around town; playing football; setting up a Fall Wellness Festival.

We hope you can also join us at the League of Municipalities annual conference, November 16-19 at the Atlantic City Convention Center.  Look for our booth in the 100-aisle lounge area.  This year, our MWC League session entitled "A Successful Mayors Wellness Campaign: It Takes a Village” is on Wednesday, November 17, at 3:45 p.m.  Our annual MWC Reception will be held on November 17th, from 5-7pm in Crown Ballroom 2 of the Sheraton Convention Center Hotel (adjacent to the convention center.)  Our special guest is Daphne Oz, author of The Dorm Room Diet and daughter of New York Times bestselling authors Dr. Mehmet Oz and Lisa Oz.  We welcome all mayors and municipal officials to join us at the reception before heading out for the evening.  Mark your calendar!

You can find out more by visiting our website at www.mayorswellnesscampaign.org or you can feel free to call me at 609-434-1110 or by email at ELittman@njhcqi.org.  Currently, more than half of the New Jersey’s 566 municipalities are participating in the campaign and are working aggressively to decrease obesity rates and increase the overall health of their communities.  Why don’t you join us?

Best regards,

Emily Littman
Director, Mayors Wellness Campaign
