Re: ShapingNJ: The State Partnership for Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention
On behalf of Mayor James Anzaldi, President, New Jersey State League of Municipalities, and Commissioner Poonam Alaigh, MD, MSHCPM, FACP, New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), I am pleased to announce the partnership between the League and ShapingNJ: The State Partnership for Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention. ShapingNJ is a public-private partnership of nearly 100 organizations across New Jersey, coordinated by DHSS, working to reduce the burden of obesity and chronic disease on New Jersey residents.
Over the next 10 years, ShapingNJ partners will implement policy and environmental strategies to improve nutrition and increase physical activity in the settings where New Jersey residents live, grow, play, learn and work – to “make the healthy choice, the easy choice.”
We believe mayors and other local officials will be essential strategic allies in this partnership because of their community responsibilities and their role as leaders.
The League’s partnership with ShapingNJ will create new opportunities and resources for mayors to improve local food systems – grocery stores, farmers markets, community gardens--and built environments – sidewalks, playgrounds, parks, trails--so that everyone has access to healthy foods and safe places to be physically active.
Through the ShapingNJ partnership we hope to enhance your ability to collaborate with numerous private voluntary organizations, local faith-based organizations, businesses and foundations and state agencies to improve the health of your residents, their quality of life, your local economy and the environment.
We look forward to engaging you in a productive partnership. For more information, we invite you to visit www.shapingnj.gov or contact the Office of Nutrition & Fitness at (609) 292-2209 or electronically at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Very truly yours,
William G. Dressel, Jr.
