Re:    Heat Safety

Dear Mayor:

Meteorologists predict temperatures in New Jersey will reach triple digits this week.  Heat waves can be very dangerous for older residents, children, pets, and people with special needs.

Attached is information from the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management with heat related emergency safety tips.  Among the most important items are:

  • Drink water regularly even if you are not thirsty.  Limit alcohol, and sugary drinks which speeds dehydration.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in the car.
  • Check on elderly and special needs individuals in your community who may need assistance keeping cool.

You should coordinate with your local/county OEM to ensure that all your residents are safe.  For more information, go to www.ready.nj.gov or call 211.

Very truly yours,

William G. Dressel, Jr.
Executive Director
