Re:  Invitation to Join Mayor’s Wellness Campaign

Dear Mayor:

Summer is here and our residents are spending more and more time out of doors. This is the perfect time to re-energize your Mayors Wellness Campaign, or if you have not established a program yet, to do so.

The Mayors Wellness Campaign (MWC) is collaboration between the New Jersey State League of Municipalities and the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute (NJHCQI). The initiative champions Mayors as advocates for community health. Just five years old, the MWC already counts more than half of the state’s municipalities as participants. Some of the activities MWC towns are engaged in this summer include:

  • The Mayors Healthy Cook-off - The next one of these popular events that pit mayors in a cooking contest to see who can create the healthiest and tastiest dishes will take place late this summer in Morris County.

  • Toxic Waistlines Competition - Bernards Township recently received a grant from the NJHCQI to conduct our state’s second “toxic waistlines competition,” wherein residents compete to see who can lose the most weight and inches off their waists over the summer months.

  • Perth Amboy recently held a “Put Your Community in Motion” Health Fair as part of its successful Mayors Wellness Campaign.

  • Franklin Lakes just completed a “family yoga session” and a 5k fitness run-walk in its town.

There are literally scores of additional examples of MWC activities across the state. You can find many of these simply by “Googling” the words “Mayors Wellness Campaign.”

If you are not a participating town, please consider joining immediately. Becoming a Mayors Wellness Campaign town is as simple as declaring your desire to get your town as healthy as can be and by issuing a mayoral proclamation or passing a council resolution. Samples of both documents can be found at the MWC website: www.mayorswellnesscampaign.org

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO FEE TO JOIN. In fact, joining the MWC makes your town eligible for grants which are occasionally offered by the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute and its participating partners.

Please take action today to join the Mayors Wellness Campaign.

Very truly yours,

William G. Dressel, Jr.
Executive Director
