Re: S-1451 local redevelopment, relocation assistance and eminent domain, Before Senate on Thursday
On December 21st we reported that S-1451, which would revise the laws concerning local redevelopment, relocation assistance and eminent domain, was held from a vote at the December 20th Senate voting session. The bill was brought to the floor and debated, but after a motion to amend the bill on the floor, it was pulled from discussion. The bill is scheduled for a floor vote on Thursday, January 6th.
The League opposed this legislation because it will have a negative impact on redevelopment and hinder local governments’ tools to promote economic growth. S-1451 does not address the new challenges faced by local government leaders. Further, we would recommend that any new legislation in this area should take into account recent court cases, which have recognized the protection of property owners, but balanced the ability of local governments to engage in redevelopment and revitalization of their communities. For more on this bill, please see our December 8 Dear Mayor letter.
We urge you contact and ask your State Senator to oppose S-1451.
Very Truly Yours,
William G. Dressel,
