I.          Governor Takes Action on Numerous Bills
II.        Atlantic City Legislation
III.       Snowstorm Preparation
IV.       Federal Update

Dear Mayor:

Here is summary of some issues of interest to local governments.

I.          Governor Takes Action on Numerous Bills

On Tuesday, the final day to take action on legislation passed in the 216th Legislature, the Governor took action on several bills of interest to local governments.    Of particular note, Governor Christie vetoed League-supported  legislation, which  would have clarified and restored municipal regulatory authority of certain multi-family dwellings. He also vetoed legislation opposed by the League, regarding property tax exemptions for non-profit hospitals which include for-profit functions.    For a summary of bills of interest to local government, please click here.

II.        Atlantic City Legislation

Legislation, which would allow for heightened state intervention in Atlantic City, is scheduled for discussion purposes only next Thursday before the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee on Thursday, January 28.    In light of the League’s core principle of defending home rule, the League is reviewing the legislation, which is likely to be amended before advancing, and will report back to you on developments.    For a copy of the legislation (S-970) as introduced, please click here.

III.       Snowstorm Preparation

In anticipation of Winter Storm Jonas, the League will provide updates on its “January Storm Preparation” web page which can be accessed by clicking here.

IV.       Federal Update

In case you missed it earlier this week we provided a federal update that including information on the delay of the ACA excise tax, postponement of federal public pension reporting, the US Supreme Court case on public sector collective bargaining, suspension of reimbursement from Asset Forfeiture Program, and EPA comment period for Stormwater Regulations.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Darcy, CAE
