Re:   REMINDER: Mayor Baraka Hosting Free Statewide Summit

Dear Mayor:

As indicated in our earlier letter (http://www.njslom.org/letters/2015-0225-Mayoral-Summit.html) Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and NJSACC: The Statewide Network for New Jersey’s Afterschool Communities will be hosting New Jersey’s first-ever statewide Mayoral Summit: Strong Youth, Strong Cities: Building Municipal Systems to Invest Beyond the Classroom”. This summit is being held on Wednesday, April 15th, 2015 at the Newark Club in Newark, focusing on the importance of afterschool and expanded learning time programming and its impact on the success of New Jersey’s youth and the communities in which they live.

The summit will provide New Jersey mayors and key stakeholders with a unique opportunity to connect on state and national policy; increase awareness of issues affecting school-age youth and discuss afterschool and out-of-school time systems and partnerships to build, maintain and sustain quality programming. The issues impacting school-age youth are inextricably linked to the health and sustainability of cities and towns-graduation, retention and juvenile justice rates and workforce and economic development.

Featured speakers include national experts from The Wallace Foundation and the National Institute on Out-of-School Time. A top level administrator from Rutgers University and a student panel will highlight the impact of out-of-school time in New Jersey and share their experiences and success. Subsequently, NJSACC will offer free technical assistance to interested mayors to create a consortium of stakeholders who will continue to advance afterschool and expanded learning.

Mayors have invited key partners to attend the summit, including school superintendents, recreation directors, employment directors or health and human services administrators. Due to grant funds and generous support from The National League of Cities, The Charles S. Mott Foundation, The Wallace Foundation, The Victoria Foundation and The Prudential Foundation, this summit is offered at no charge to participants.

This is a free summit, however registration is required and we encourage teams of at least two members to attend from each municipality.  Register at: NJSACC.org/summit

Wednesday, April 15, 2015, 9:00am-3:30pm;
The Metropolitan Room at the Newark Club
1085 Raymond Boulevard, 22nd floor, Newark, New Jersey 07102

We hope your municipality can take advantage of this opportunity.

Very truly yours,

William G. Dressel, Jr.
Executive Director
