Re: Transition

Dear Mayor:

The following is a communication from Bill Dressel that was presented to me and members of the League Executive Board as of today advising of his intended retirement.  Bill has faithfully and professionally served the League and New Jersey municipalities for many years and will be greatly missed by all.  We wish him good fortune and continued good health as he begins the next phase of his life.

Given the impact of Bill’s decision on the League and member municipalities, I thought you should be informed of this development as soon as possible.

In anticipation of Bill’s retirement, the League officers began transition planning for a new executive director last summer and there will be further information about this process within the next several weeks.  This information will be sent to you separately.

Sincerely

Brian Wahler
Mayor, Piscataway
League President

Re: Transition

Dear Mayor:

In a few short weeks, we will be closing out 2014 and beginning a new year of challenges and opportunities. In May of 2015 the League will also be celebrating its 100th year of service to our State's 565 municipalities and over 13,000 elected and appointed officials.

I thought now was the opportune time to inform you of my intentions to retire as your Executive Director at the close of the League's fiscal year on June 30, 2015.

Over the past 41 years, I have had the honor and privilege of spending a professional career committed to improving the institution of municipal government. This was indeed "my dream job" and I owe a great debt of gratitude to the League's leadership, staff and the thousands of elected and appointed officials with whom I have personally worked. I have the deepest respect and admiration for the local officials who contribute and sacrifice so much to improve the quality of life in their communities.

You have honored me by allowing me to serve you and I will be eternally grateful. I am a transplant New Jerseyan from northern Virginia who came to New Jersey as a young, single 25 year old who viewed the League as a" stepping stone" to become a municipal manager. As fate would have it, I never regretted my decision not to pursue the municipal management profession. I also met a lifelong New Jersey girl, Iris. We have been married for 33 years. I love this state and will forever call New Jersey my home.

I can assure you that the League Executive Board will undertake a thorough and deliberative recruitment and selection process.  This will surely result in the best available replacement for this position.  With this change in leadership, the entire staff will continue to serve the best interests of the membership, as they have during my tenure.  I will continue with my regular duties and do what I can to assist in an orderly transition.

Sincerely

William G. Dressel, Jr.
Executive Director
New Jersey League of Municipalities
