Re: Important Conference Sessions Sustainability

Dear Mayor:

We are sending a series of letters to League Conference Delegates to prepare them to make the most of their time at our 99th Annual Conference. Please share this with any interested parties.

In 2006, the NJLM Mayors’ Committee for a Green Future (MCGF) was formed. Then, the MCGF and the Sustainability Institute at The College of New Jersey, in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, began a collaboration that would eventually result in the public launch of Sustainable Jersey in February 2009. Sustainable Jersey is now a voluntary certification program for municipalities. The organization supports efforts to reduce waste, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and improve environmental equity.

A total of 139 towns are currently certified – our largest certification number yet – with a total of 22 silver certified communities. Over 5,000 sustainability actions have been completed and approved over the life of the program by municipalities across the state of New Jersey. At the close of the last fiscal year, 412 municipalities (73%) were participating in the program and over 84% of the State’s population lives in a registered or certified community. The following sessions will deal directly and in detail with this most important subject.
