RE: Stopgap Transportation Funding Bill Advances

Dear Mayor:

Last evening in Washington, the House passed HR 5021 to avert the impending shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund and extend the current surface transportation program (MAP-21) until May 2015.  (For more specifics, see our letter of July 9 at During debate, the House rejected an attempt to pass a shorter extension, which would have forced Congress to find a long term fix to funding for transportation programs.

The bill passed 367 – 55.   (New Jersey Congressmen Frelinghuysen, Lance, LoBiondo, Pallone, Pascrell, Payne, Runyan, Sires and Smith votes in favor of the bill; while Congressmen Garrett and Holt were opposed.)

The bill now goes to the Senate, where it is expected to pass before the U.S. Department of Transportation is forced to limit transportation reimbursements to states.

While we are grateful that the immediate threat to our infrastructure has been addressed, the need for a longer-term fix remains. Please remind our Congressional Representatives of that fact. We will keep you posted on future developments.
