RE: Countering Violent Extremism and Preparedness Grant Programs Fact Sheet

Dear Mayor:

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has issued a Countering Violent Extremism and Preparedness Grant Programs Fact Sheet intended to inform state, local, territorial and tribal stakeholders of the relevant grant guidance that pertains to Countering Violent Extremism and preparedness grants.  The Fact Sheet details related efforts and the process through local governments can apply for the available resources.

The Homeland Security Grant Program provides funding to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to and recover from potential terrorist attacks and other hazards.  The Homeland Security Grant Program is comprised of several related grant programs; however the following three are the most relevant to Countering Violent Extremism and preventing violent attacks:

  • State Homeland Security Program: Provides funding to state/territories and local jurisdictions. By law, 80 percent of Homeland Security Grant Program funding must be passed through to local units of government.
  • Tribal Homeland Security Grant Program: Provides funding directly to eligible tribes to address their unique security needs and to help strengthen the Nation against risks associated with terrorist attacks.
  • Urban Areas Security Initiative: Addresses the unique risk-driven and capabilities-based planning, organization, equipment, training, and exercise needs of high-threat, high-density Urban Areas.

Grant applications are due May 23, 2014. Visit the League’s Grant Resource Center’s Grant News and Information page to view a PDF of the Fact Sheet referenced above.

Very truly yours,

William G. Dressel, Jr.
Executive Director
