Re: Register Today: “Prisoner Re-entry: Breaking the Cycle” Conference – April 17th
Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop wants to invite all of his colleague mayors to an important conference he will be hosting in his city on April 17th. The purpose of the conference is to focus upon prisoner reentry - the process of an ex-offender’s reintegration into civil society.
The overwhelming numbers of ex-offenders are clinically addicted; treatment is essential to maintain the sobriety of the ex-offenders. In addition, sober housing is a critical challenge, which must be addressed. Felons are prohibited from residing in federal housing or qualifying for federal housing benefits. Therefore, local and state governments must necessarily be a provider of housing. Training and employment is the third leg of the reentry initiative; addiction treatment, housing, and employment.
Within three years of release, ex-offenders typically recidivate. A full two-thirds of ex-offenders commit a felony within three years of release. Having a job is an essential corner stone for financial independence and personal dignity. Lastly, the support of family and the religious community is of great demonstrative benefit in sustaining an ex-offender during the difficult reentry process.
The conference will focus on ex-offenders, successful reentry initiatives, and attempts to design a plan for local and regional reentry efforts. Confirmed speakers include United States Attorney, Paul Fishman, former NBA player, Jayson Williams, United States Magistrate Judge, Madeline Arleo and Hudson County Warden, Oscar Aviles. Our goal is to set forth “reentry best practices” to better the success of our ex-offenders.
The ultimate costs of failing to reintegrate ex-offenders into our society and our municipalities will always exceed the cost of an effective re-entry program. This conference is scheduled for:
