RE: Affordable Care Act Free Online Information Session Scheduled

Dear Mayor:

Beginning October 1, 2013, a new Health Insurance Marketplace should open in every state, giving Americans a new way to shop for health insurance.  With that, every American will be able to begin the process of obtaining health insurance, as outlined in the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  Similarly, employers with less than 50 employees, including municipalities, will also be able to participate in their state’s Small Business Health insurance Options Program (SHOP) (   SHOP is designed to give small employers and their employees some of the advantages large employers have today, including choices among high quality health plans to meet every budget.

These changes, however, are creating a lot of confusion about what the Affordable Care Act (ACA) ( means for individuals and businesses.   The National League of Cities (NLC) hopes to clear up some of the confusion.

On Wednesday, August 28, at 2:00 p.m. ET, NLC and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will host a free online learning session on the Health Insurance Marketplace and SHOP, with information on how elected officials can help residents and small businesses obtain the health care coverage they need.

Entitled The Affordable Care Act and Your City – Helping Residents Help Themselves (, this free online learning session will not be about the politics of the ACA or the politics of the Healthcare Marketplaces and SHOPs. This will concern the reality of the Marketplaces and SHOPs, and how all local elected officials can help their residents and small businesses navigate the new requirements.

All New Jersey Mayors, or their designees, are welcome to join Emily Barson, Deputy Director of Intergovernmental and External Affairs for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Neil Bomberg, Program Director, National League of Cities, for “The Affordable Care Act and Your City – Helping Residents Help Themselves.”  To register, click here:

The hour-long learning session will include:

We thank NLC for extending this invitation to all New Jersey municipalities.

Very truly yours,

William G. Dressel, Jr.
Executive Director
