2013 National Night Out Next Tuesday
Next Tuesday, August 6, has been designated as the 30th Annual National Night Out. The first National Night Out took place on Tuesday, August 7th 1984. That first year, 2.5 million Americans took part across 400 communities in 23 states. National Night Out now involves over 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.
Municipalities all around our Nation have gone beyond the traditional “lights on” campaign and symbolic front porch vigils with various events and activities including block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits, youth events, safety demonstrations and seminars, in effort to heighten awareness and enhance community relations.
Last year, a number of New Jersey municipalities won awards in their population categories for their Nights Out programs. These include South Brunswick, Butler, Gloucester Township, Lumberton, Carteret, Spotswood, Pine Hill and Egg Harbor Township.
If you want to get your municipality involved, you can visit the website at http://www.natw.org/about-nno/ for registration and background information.
Very truly yours,
William G. Dressel, Jr.
