Re: Ethics Resources from the League

Dear Mayor:

The League offers many different resources on local government ethics for municipal officials, and we wanted to make sure that you were aware of them.

On our webpage, you can visit our Ethics Resource Center. This page contains the full text of the Local Government Ethics Law, information on upcoming ethics seminars offered by the League and other agencies, as well as articles detailing different topics of local government ethics. You can find the updated page at http://www.njslom.org/ethics_resource_center.html .

Our Bureau of Municipal Information also offers free legal consultation with our Staff Attorney, Edward Purcell Esq., on any topic of municipal interest including ethics. If you have a question about the Local Government Ethics Law and you want an informal consultation with an attorney knowledgeable in municipal law, contact Edward Purcell Esq., at the League, ex. 137, or at epurcell@njslom.com . *Please note that the intent of this service is to provide a helpful consultation and not legal advice. Your first and main resource for legal advice should be your municipal attorney.

The League regularly offers seminars throughout the state on local government ethics, given by League General Counsel Bill Kearns Esq. Check our Ethics Resource Center frequently and keep an eye out for mailings from the League with dates and locations.

The League can also arrange for a seminar right in your municipality, give by the League General Counsel Bill Kearns Esq., for all employees or for employees from a combination of municipalities. For costs and arrangements, contact Bill Dressel at BDressel@njslom.com or at the League, ex. 122.

Our recently updated publication, the Elected Officials Handbook, also contains the full text of the Local Government Ethics Law as well as several article of interest dealing with pay to play, conflicts of interest, and ethical conduct. You can order this publication here: http://www.njslom.org/publications/Elected-Officials-Order-Form.pdf  or by contacting Becky Wright at bwright@njslom.com or at the League, ex. 110.

Over the next few weeks the League will be announcing upcoming Ethics Seminars for the rest of this year. These events can be found at http://www.njslom.org/seminars.html .  For more information please contact Danielle Holland-Htut at dholland@njslom.com or at the League, ex. 118.

Lastly, at the upcoming 98th annual League Conference in November, we will offer three separate educational seminars on local government ethics: Ethical Standards- More than Just Statutory; Dos and Don’ts for Local Government Ethics; and Elected Officials Refresher:  Ethics, Open Public Meetings, and OPRA.  Information on these sessions, as well as the Conference in general, can be found at http://njslom.org/98thconf/index.html. This site will be frequently updated so check back often.

Very Truly Yours,

William G. Dressel, Jr.
Executive Director
