RE: Property Tax in New Jersey: A Short and Simple Glimpse Updated

Dear Mayor:

The League has updated our informative Property Tax in New Jersey brochure, which tries to explain, for any interested citizens, the factors that go into determining what a home owner’s or local business’ annual property tax will be. You are welcome to share this brochure with others in your administration and with your taxpayers. You can view it and download it froms

This brochure discusses the history and administration of the property tax in our Garden State, from the Colonial period to the present. Public opinion polls continue to cite dissatisfaction with property taxes as a major concern of voters. Property taxes are also blamed for driving businesses to locate or relocate to other States and as a drag on real estate sales and development.

Understanding the many facets of our regressive property taxes can help readers to better evaluate reform and relief proposals. To learn more about the League’s advocacy efforts directed toward property tax reform and relief and better municipal government, visit our website at

You are also welcome to link the brochure to your municipal website, to assist in sharing this information with your constituents. For more information, contact Jon Moran at 609-695-3481, ext. 121 or

Very truly yours,

William G. Dressel, Jr.
Executive Director
