Re:    Governor Veto Early Voting Bill

Dear Mayor,

Earlier today Governor Christie vetoed the Early Voting legislation (A-3553/S-2364).  As we previously reported (see March 22 Dear Mayor Letter), the League opposed the legislation, as it introduced a new, complex, and potentially expensive process.  Furthermore, the process is unnecessary as we currently have early voting, Vote by Mail, which permits voters every opportunity to vote and participate in the democratic process.

In his absolute veto Governor Christie noted that since 2009 New Jersey voters have been able to vote early in person using “Vote by Mail” 45 days prior to the primary and general election.  In last November’s election nearly 300,000 mail-in ballots were cast.  Governor Christie also noted that “Vote by Mail has proven to be effective and reliable with minimal cost borne by the State.”

We thank Governor Christie for his absolute veto and we thank you for reaching out to your State Senators and Assembly representatives urging their opposition to bill.

Very truly yours,

William G. Dressel, Jr.
Executive Director
