Re: A-2756 up for a vote in full Assembly on Monday, April 29
A-2756, which provides surviving spouses of certain fire and police personnel who die in line of duty with workers' compensation for entire period of survivorship, is up for a vote in the full Assembly on Monday, April 29. The League opposes this bill.
While we appreciate the sponsors’ intent, A-2756 is that it is a discriminatory benefit enhancement at a time of extreme economic uncertainties. These benefits are not available to surviving spouses of other municipal employees. Municipalities are told they must do more with less even as budgets are stretched to the limit.
This Legislation is too costly as it would increase benefits to surviving spouses of police and fire officers for life. However, there are currently other benefit programs that meet the needs of surviving spouses when this unfortunate situation occurs.
We ask that you contact your Assembly members and urge them to vote NO on A-2756.
Very truly yours,
William G. Dressel, Jr.
