Re: Ethics Resources from the League
The League offers many different resources on local government ethics for municipal officials, and we wanted to make sure you were aware of them.
On our webpage, you can visit our Ethics Resource Center. This page contains the full text of the Local Government Ethics Law, information on upcoming ethics seminars offered by the League and other agencies, as well as articles detailing different topics of local government ethics. You can find the updated page at http://www.njslom.org/ethics_resource_center.html.
Our Bureau of Municipal Information also offers free legal consultation with our Staff Attorney, Matthew Weng, on any topic of municipal interest including ethics. If you have a question about the Local Government Ethics Law and you want an informal consultation with an attorney knowledgeable in municipal law, contact Matthew Weng, at the League, ex. 137, or at firstname.lastname@example.org. *Please note that the intent of this service is to provide a helpful consultation and not legal advice. Your first and main resource for legal advice should be your municipal attorney.
The League regularly offers seminars throughout the state on local government ethics, given by League General Counsel Bill Kearns. Check our Ethics Resource Center frequently and keep an eye out for mailings from the League with dates and locations.
The League can also arrange for a seminar, given by League General Counsel Bill Kearns, to be given in your municipality for all employees or for employees from a combination of municipalities. For costs and arrangements, contact Bill Dressel at BDressel@njslom.com or (609) 695-3481 x122.
Our recently updated publication, the Elected Officials Handbook, also contains the full text of the Local Government Ethics Law as well as several articles of interest dealing with pay to play, conflicts of interest, and ethical conduct. You can order this publication here: http://www.njslom.org/Elected-Officials-Order-Form.pdf or by contacting Becky Wright at email@example.com or 609-695-3481 ext. 110.
On June 14th, 2013, at the Conference Center in West Windsor, you can attend the League’s Mini-Conference. There will be sessions on Local Government Ethics as well as many other topics. Check our website for updates on the June Mini-Conference here: http://www.njslom.org/seminars.html.
Finally, at the upcoming 98th annual League Conference in November, we will offer three separate educational seminars on local government ethics: Ethical Standards – More than Just Statutory; Dos and Don’ts of Local Government Ethics; and Elected Officials Refresher Part Two: Ethics, Open Public Meetings and OPRA and Civility in Public Discourse. You can find more information on these sessions, as well as the Conference in general, at http://www.njslom.org/98thconf/index.html. This site will be frequently updated so check back often.
Very truly yours,
William G. Dressel, Jr.
