RE: BPU and League of Municipalities Vegetation Management Pilot

Dear Mayor:

Last week, I met with Board of Public Utilities President Bob Hanna. We discussed the numerous service disruptions caused by severe weather events, over the past two years, and related issues and concerns. One concern is the need for better vegetation management, in order to limit the likelihood of wires being downed by falling trees and branches. We agree that more needs to be done in this manner to protect the safety of our residents.

President Hanna, in partnership with the League, wants to identify a limited number of municipalities to develop and participate in a beneficial vegetation management pilot. The goal is to better protect our residents and municipalities by developing policies and practices to reduce and minimize to the greatest degree possible electric service disruptions.

I want to thank President Hanna for allowing the League to partner with the BPU along with the local utility provider in developing a policy and practices that could help all municipalities and residents to better prepare for the high winds that will accompany future storms. If successful, this could help everyone in our State by helping to reduce repeated and lengthy service outages.

If you are interested in having your municipality considered for participation in this pilot, e-mail notification to League Executive Director Bill Dressel at or by fax or mail to the League offices, indicating your town/county and utility electric service area.

Very truly yours,

Janice S. Mironov, President,
New Jersey State League of Municipalities,
Mayor, East Windsor Township
