Re:       Update on early voting bills

Dear Mayor:

S-2364, which would require early voting in most elections, passed the full Senate on Monday, March 18 by a vote of 24-16, along party lines.  The Assembly version of the bill, A-3553, which has been amended to be identical to the Senate version, is scheduled for a vote in the full Assembly this Thursday, March 21.  For more information on these bills, see our Mayor’s letters of March 1 and March 6.

Both bills would now require early voting locations to be spread throughout the county at either 3, 5, or 7 locations, depending on the number of registered voters in the county.  These locations could still be in a municipal building.  The hours of early voting would be from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and on Sundays, from 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.

According to the Office of Legislative Services, these bills could cost as much as $22.8 million.

We continue to oppose these bills, as they introduce a new, complex, and potentially expensive process.  Furthermore, they are unnecessary as we currently have a process, Vote by Mail, which permits voters every opportunity to vote and participate in the democratic process.

We encourage you to continue to pass resolutions opposing these bills and to forward those resolutions to your state legislators as well as the Governor’s office.  You can find a sample resolution here: /www.njslom.org/resolutions/2013-0301-Resolution-Early-Vote-A-3553-S-2364.pdf

In addition, we urge you to reach out to your Assembly representatives and urge them to vote NO on A-3553.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact League Staff Attorney Matthew Weng at 609-695-3481 ext 137 or at mweng@njslom.com.

Very truly yours

William G. Dressel, Jr.
Executive Director
