RE: Message From the League President

Dear Mayor,

During these stressful times it is important to remember that we are the leaders who need to keep our residents calm. The fact is that we can not control what happens around us, all we can do is control how we react to the situation. We are all in this together and my heart, and most others, go out to those who were impacted the worst in the Southern portion of our state. Many were just touched by Hurricane Sandy with minimal damage but remain without power. Think of those who lost life and all possessions and maybe it makes it easier to put into perspective. It is not easy but when it isn’t easy is when we rise up and lead.

The League is working together with the Administration to assist in any way we can. There are those who are in better shape, putting together efforts to help those who are worse off. This is the true spirit of New Jersey.

The utilities are doing the best they can in dealing with this worst storm in the history of New Jersey and maybe the world. I know there are those angry with their utility and feel that they don’t care. That could not be farther from the truth. Working for one utility and having worked for another, I can tell you they are working as hard as they can to get everyone back in power. It is a long and cumbersome process that requires much focus on safety. It seems to the unknowing that it is easy to just “put the wires back up”. It is not that easy. In a storm of this magnitude of not just wind but also water, it is an extreme challenge. There have been improvements made to the process since last year but no matter what improvements are made, there can still be more. That is understood but in this case, no one can prepare for something of this magnitude. Patience is paramount in this stressful time.

May God Bless all of us and please do reach out to League Executive Director, William Dressel at or 609 695-3481 ext 122 if we can be of assistance.

Most Sincerely,

Art Ondish
President NJ State League of Municipalities
