Re: National Hunger Action Month

Dear Mayor:

In support of National Hunger Action Month this September, Walmart is calling on customers, suppliers, and associates nationwide to rally once again in the fight against hunger.  This fall’s ‘Fighting Hunger Together’ initiative is part of Walmart’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015.

You can help by letting your residents know about this program and encouraging them to participate.

The ‘Fighting Hunger Together’ fall initiative will run from Sept.17 through Oct. 12 in all U.S. Walmart stores.  Your residents can join the fight by purchasing select, participating products available in Walmart stores and following instructions on the packaging to generate meals to feed the hungry in communities nationwide through Feeding America’s food bank network.

In addition, customers and Walmart associates can help fight hunger in their local communities through Walmart’s ‘Fighting Hunger Together’ Golden Spark promotion and volunteer challenge.  Golden Spark winners will choose a community to receive a $50,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to start or expand a backpack program that will provide vital meals to kids over the weekend when free or reduced meals are not available.

From Sept. 17 through Oct. 14, Walmart will randomly award 50 Golden Sparks at $50,000 each to customers and associates.  All customer Golden Spark winners also will be entered to win a live concert in the community of their choice to be performed later this fall by The Band Perry—national hunger advocates.

Anyone can enter for a chance to win a Golden Spark for their community by going to www.walmart.com/hunger. Walmart’s nearly 20 million Facebook fans also can enter the Golden Spark promotion through the ‘Live Better’ tab on Walmart’s Facebook page.

Very truly yours,

William G. Dressel, Jr.
Executive Director
