Re:       RECREATION AND PARK MONTH

Dear Mayor:

If you’re like me, paying taxes is not high on your list of fun activities, but I do like driving on paved roads. I am happy knowing that emergency services are on-call, on the watch and on duty, 24 hours a day and seven days a week. I am grateful that our children can learn and grow in good, safe schools. And it’s great knowing that there are safe, clean places where we can live, work, shop, meet, exercise, play and enjoy our natural environment.

Local parks and recreation centers satisfy vital needs that can only be filled by the public sector. All the world’s great cities have great parks, but New Jersey’s municipal parks are as good as any, anywhere. And in the most densely populated State in the Nation, the dedication, preservation and maintenance of our local parks and rec centers is a credit to past and current local officials.

Summer is officially here, and people across the country are looking to get outside and enjoy the weather, get some exercise, or just relax. Whether it’s for a barbeque or a baseball game, many of them will head for a park facility run by their local government.

The National Recreation and Park Association has designated July as Park and Recreation Month, and local governments are invited to join the celebration. (Click on the link to visit their website.) Not only are recreation centers and parks among the most visible local government services, they’re also one of the most fun. That means that July isn’t just a great time to enjoy the weather, it’s also an opportunity to connect with the community to demonstrate the value of their local public services.

Our New Jersey Parks and Recreation Association is publicizing local events on their website. Click this link (http://www.njslom.org/notices/Summer_is_here.pdf) to access their brochure. Let them know about any outdoor concerts, movies, theater, carnivals, 5K runs, or any other summer events you have planned that are open to the entire New Jersey community, without residency or membership restrictions.

Have a great time this month. And thank you for the opportunities you provide for all the people of our Garden State.

Very truly yours,

William G. Dressel, Jr.

Executive Director
