FINAL NOTICE.

SENATE ACTION ON MUNICIPAL PROPERTY TAX RELIEF RESTORATION SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW.   PLEASE ASK YOUR STATE SENATOR TO APPROVE A-2921/S-1900.

Dear Mayor:

Over the past two years, Legislators have made tough choices on difficult issues and we believe that our State is a better place because of that. On issues like unfunded mandates, arbitration reform and pension and health benefit reform, they have worked with their legislative colleagues, across party lines. And they have made progress. We know that it has not been easy. It has taken leadership and it has taken discipline.  And we thank them for what they have done to help local officials, going forward, to get a better handle on the many local costs imposed by past State actions.

What we ask of them now will take similar discipline. This year, we want them to begin to end the State’s chronic dependence on local revenues to balance its budget. We want them to begin to restore to local budgets the dollars that have been diverted for many years to State purposes.

On Monday, the Assembly approved A-2921 with a bi-partisan vote of 51 – 14, with 14 abstentions. Tomorrow in Trenton, your State Senator will be given the chance to vote on A-2921 and its companion, S-1900.

Today, we ask you to do two things.

FIRST:

ON BEHALF OF MAYORS ALL AROUND OUR GARDEN STATE, PLEASE URGE YOUR SENATOR TO VOTE “YES” ON A-2921/S-1900.

The cumulative impact of years of underfunding has left many municipalities with serious needs and burdensome property taxes. Local elected officials are in the best position to decide the best use for these resources. Further, these monies were always intended to fund local programs and services.

TO GIVE OUR MAYORS A PROPERTY TAX RELIEF TOOL THEY NEED, WE NEED THE SENATE TO APPROVE A-2921/S-1900.

SECOND (In the hope that the Senate will approve this legislation):

PLEASE REACH OUT TO YOUR CONTACT IN THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE AND ASK FOR HIS CONSIDERATION IN RESPONDING TO NEEDS OF HIS COLLEAGUES ON THE LOCAL LEVEL.

Call your Regional Intergovernmental Affairs Director or Ms. Bridget Kelly, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs in the Governor’s Office at 609-777-2518.

URGE GOVERNOR CHRISTIE TO SIGN A-2921/S-1900, WHEN IT IS PASSED BY THE SENATE, WITHOUT DELAY.
