Re:      2012 Census Boundary and Annexation Survey

Dear Mayor:

The U.S. Census Bureau conducts the Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS) annually to collect information about selected legally defined geographic areas. The BAS is used to update information about the legal boundaries and names of all governmental units in the United States. The Census Bureau uses the boundary information collected in the BAS to tabulate data for the decennial and economic censuses, and annual estimates and surveys such as the Population Estimates Program and the American Community Survey.  Feature changes (new roads, realigned roads, railway realignments, etc.) are also accepted through BAS, but no guarantee of these features getting digitized can be given.  In general, though, the Census Bureau does its best to include all feature updates into it's geographic database.

The BAS is one of the few options a municipal government has to look at what is presently in the Census Bureau's geographic database (TIGER).  Advance response letters for the BAS were mailed to municipalities starting in December of 2011 and continuing into January 2012.  Letters are typically sent to the head elected official of each government. All BAS respondents who wish to submit boundary changes, corrections, or feature updates must request maps from the Census Bureau or download materials (including paper maps) from the website referenced below.  Submissions may be made digitally or on paper.

Additional materials and information can be found on the Census Bureau’s Boundary and Annexation homepage at Questions can be forwarded to the geography divisions of the Census Bureau’s New York Regional Office at 1-800-991-2520, Philadelphia Regional Office at 1-800-262-4236, or the New Jersey State Data Center at 609-984-2595.

Very truly yours
