Last Spring the Assembly passed A-3766 “Market Competition and Consumer Choice Act”, which we reported in an April 18 Dear Mayor letter , would eliminate valuable benefits and service received by municipalities through the statewide cable franchise. Your communications to legislators coupled with the concerted effort by the Ratepayer Advocate, AARP, the Jersey Access Group and others stopped the companion legislation S-2664 from moving forward.
We strongly believe that the lame duck session may bring a renewed effort to pass S-2664 in some form and send the bill to Governor Christie. In an effort to address a perceived desire on the part of legislators to deregulate the cable and phone industries where possible, a coalition including the League has worked with Senator Smith to develop an alternative legislation S-3062.
