RE:“Local Law Enforcement Strategies: Technology and New Management Models”

Dear Mayor,

On Wednesday March 30, the NJLM Educational Foundation held an event to help communities find ways of maintaining local law enforcement during a time of shrinking resources – both human and financial.  More than 80 municipal officials, community leaders and public safety professionals attended “Local Law Enforcement Strategies: Technology and New Management Models”  at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah.

The NJLM Educational Foundation chose the topic of law enforcement as the focal point of the effects caused by local fiscal stress.  This is where all local operations will see resources diverted; creating a great need for education and understanding of the far reaching effects of changes in local law enforcement.

This program provided critically needed education with regard to:

  • the significant changes that may occur in police department budgets and how those changes will impact all other budgets
  • how these changes may translate to financial agreements with other jurisdictions (county and municipal)
  • structural options being explored – financial, management, and technological
  • results of efficiency research and efforts
  • financial research on regionalization, shared service and mergers

The keynote by Jose Cordero, former Director, Law Enforcement Strategy, Office of the Attorney General; and former Directory of Public Safety, East Orange set the tone for the day – new approaches are needed to do the same – with less.

Cordero was joined by experts from Bergen County Police; systems security experts; NJ Association of Chiefs of Police;  and research from Government Efficiency Movement

The event also included a tour of the Bergen County Public Safety Operations Center and THOR (Tactical Homeland Operational Response) – an 80’ long mobile command center.
